Urge Special Mission to Syria Immediately

Kontras (the Commission for the Disappeared and Victims of Violence) urges the Government of Indonesia to be able to perform in concrete actions through diplomatic efforts and any multilateral forums such as UN Human Rights Council and Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

It relates with series of violence against civilians in Syria. A series of Violence in the Syrians is getting worse; at least 137 people were reported killed by government forces on Thursday, 9 February 2012. At the time, President Bashar al-Assad has increased the brutal attacks on opposition party that wants to end his regime. The Syiria uprising has been since January 26, 2011, even though it was still in the form of sporadic events. But since 15 March 2011, mass protests demanding the resignation of the government Bashar al-Assad had responded with a series of violence that has been continuing up to day against the opposition parties including the activists.

We had noted that it has been raised a special mission to Syiria. It is supposedly that mission would be conducted by the Arab League which is planning a special mission to Syria on January 28, 2012, but it failed because the conditions of violence in Syria are getting worse. It is exacerbated by the failure of the resolution issued by the United Nations to suppress the violence in the Syria.

However, we also noted the initiatives recently issued by United Nations Special Envoy to be sent to Syria. On going information mentioned that the UN special mission to Syria will be joining the Arab league joint mission.

Meanwhile, the Indonesian government urged the Syrian government to immediately stop the various forms of violence and civil society conducted in Syria. It was said by Foreign Minister in a press release post-collapse United Nations passed a draft resolution to Syria. Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa asked the Syrian government immediately solve the problems that occurred in the country through the political process, to avoid civilian casualties. The Indonesian government also proposed the importance of holding an international conference to raise awareness of the international community as well as Indonesia attempts to raise public awareness of the world to pressure the country, so the violence continues to occur can be stopped.

Considering the number of casualties on civilians, we, as part of civil society groups in Indonesia condemned series of violence against civilians in Syria. Thus, we urge to be conducted immediately special mission to Syria, especially joint mission will be carried out by UN-Arab League.
